FRANCIS SMITH HORNER was born in Yorkshire, England, October 16,
1818. He was the oldest of the ten children of Elias Horner and Dorothy
Smith.
Francis came to America in 1821 from North Yorkshire, England, just NW of
the great city of York. Also on the voyage were his father, mother and sister
Hannah, just 6 months old.
At the age of thirteen (c.1831), he was apprenticed to a harness-maker in Warren County, Ohio, and continued at the business for about five years
(c.1836), since when he has been engaged chiefly in farming.
In 1839, Francis married Isabel Campbell (1821-1842) who has borne him two children:
1. ELIZABETH C. born June 1841
2. DOROTHY born October 1842 and died July 1845.
Isabel Campbell probably died shortly after the birth of Dorothy in 1842 (speculation).
Dorothy died a few years later. Their bodies
are both in Shanahan Cemetery (aka Scott's), Pusheta Township, Auglaize Co., Ohio.
Francis' oldest daughter Elizabeth was nearly 90 when she
died near 1930. She married William W. Reeve in 1859 and spent her
entire adult life in the town of Rensselaer, Jasper Co., Indiana.
Elizabeth and William had 4 children, two girls, Clara and Francis, and
two boys, Ernest and Clyde.
This family was first located in Indiana in LaPorte County, Indiana near Haskell's station
on the Monon Railroad during the 1850 census (age 33). His younger
brother Cornelius came to live with Francis and help work the farm after
the death of their father, Elias in 1854.
In 1854, he came to the White Post township and in 1872 to Medarysville, to engage in mercantile
business. This store later included a bank and eventually became the firm of E.W. Horner & Co., one of the most extensive establishments in the town. This
later became the Medaryville town bank with E.W. as president.
In July, 1848 in LaPorte Co., Francis married his second wife Margaret Callaway, who has borne him five
more children;
1. ELIAS WILSON b.1849
2. SARAH C. b.1851
3. ROZETTA EVA "Eva" b.1854
4. FRANCIS CLINTON (died at 2 years) b.1858
5. FRANCIS CALLAWAY "Frank" b.1862
Mr. Horner was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and was an influential citizen.
