  ELIAS HORNER was born September 26, 1798 in Thirsk, North Yorkshire, England, and died May 22, 1854 in Pinhook, LaPorte Co., Indiana. He married ELIZABETH DOROTHY SMITH Abt. 1816 in England. She was born 1798 in Thirsk, North Yorkshire, England, and died Abt. 1866 near Monon, White Co., Indiana.

At the age of fourteen (circa 1813), was apprenticed for seven years (until circa 1820) to one of the great cutlery firms of Sheffield.

In 1821, he came to America with his wife Dorothy Smith, son Francis (b.1818) and daughter Hannah (b.1821).

He engaged in farming for several years, then in merchandising, at which he was occupied at the time of his death in 1854, in La Porte County, Ind. 

Grave marker was found at Pinhook Cemetery, New Durham Township, LaPorte County, Indiana.

He was a sincere Christian, and an Elder in the Methodist Episcopal Church.

The grave marker of Elias Horner.  His death occurred on May 23, 1854 after suffering from Cholera.  His body was buried at Pinhook Cemetery, LaPorte Co., Indiana.  (click on picture to zoom)

The location of Dorothy Smith-Horner's grave marker is currently unknown.  Her death occurred c.1866 around Monon, Indiana.  Her final days were spent with her son Cornelius and his family.
