Where did the Horner family originate?

The Horner family is recorded in Yorkshire, England (in and around York) by the mid-1500's.

Prior to that, the area around Thirsk (York) was controlled by:

  • The Normans - Arrived in 1066 from Normandy and defeated the King of England. The present royal family are descendants.
  • The Danes    - Harold Bloodaxe invaded York in the mid-800's and held it until Wessex took it back at the Battle of Stamford Bridge.
  • The Saxons   - Without the Romans, the Celts could not keep back the Picts and Scots. Asking the Saxons for help was a bad idea.
  • The Romans  - In 55 BC, Julias Caesar lead invasions of Celtic England.  Londinium was made the capital. Scotland was never taken.
  • The Celts      - Since the end of the ice-age, Celts have settled in north England.

Who is Cornelius Montfort Horner?

Of all the Horners, C.M. Horner is the most intriguing.  The youngest of Elias and Dorothy's 10 children, he would later fight in the Civil War, learn trade from his oldest brother Francis, father 11 children of his own, become the largest landowner in White County, President of the Monon Bank and owner of the town's mill, first family to have an automobile and electric power in Monon, Indiana, and a millionaire before 1900.  Horner Memorial Park is dedicated to Cornelius.  He was asked on several occasions to run for public office, but always refused.

His parents named him after a neighbor in Warren County, Ohio that was obviously of favorable influence.  The neighbor's name was Cornelius Montfort.
